Forage Sorghum Hybrid
Forage sorghum varieties are warm-season, drought-tolerant annual forages. They are most often used in arid climates where summer rainfall is inconsistent or irrigation is tightly regulated. Forage sorghums are primarily used as one-cut silage crops, and newer hybrids can compete with corn on silage yield and quality. Actually, forage sorghum can often out-perform corn on marginal ground, in warmer climates, in late-planted silage crops and/or in drought prone soils. Regrowth is minimal, so using forage sorghum for grazing is not ideal. Additionally, forage sorghum varieties are much more affordable to plant and manage than corn, with seeding costs often below $15/acre.
A category of forage sorghum hybrids is called BMR (brown midrib). The BMR trait is a recessive gene that significantly increases digestibility and palatability. While there are numerous types of BMR products that vary in forage quality, the premium BMR hybrids are some of the best forages available, rivaling the quality of corn silage. Some BMR hybrids can be dwarf types (shorter, leafier plants) or male sterile types (does not produce a viable seedhead). Each type has its own advantages. Conventional forage sorghum hybrids provide no advantages over quality BMR hybrids, and establishment price is similar.

Sorghum x Sudangrass Hybrid
Sorghum x sudangrass hybrids (often referred to as sorghum-sudan) are warm-season, drought-tolerant annual forages. They are most often used in arid climates where summer rainfall is inconsistent or as emergency forage crops in drought-stricken regions.
A category of sorghum-sudan is called BMR (brown midrib). The BMR trait is a recessive gene that significantly increases digestibility and palatability. While there are numerous types of BMR products that vary in forage quality, the premium BMR hybrids are some of the best forages available, rivaling the quality of cool-season grasses and corn silage.
There are several types of BMR sorghum-sudan products, including dwarf types (shorter, leafier plants) and photoperiod sensitive types (will stay vegetative until daylight falls below 12 hours and 20 minutes).
